David Ladley Jephson Briggs enlisted into The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) before volunteering for airborne forces in November 1942.
He qualified as a military parachutist on course 38, which ran at RAF Ringway from 9 to 20 November 1942, and was posted to 10 Platoon, T Coy, 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment.
L/Cpl Briggs served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Arnhem. He was wounded whilst on Operation Market Garden when he was hit in the face by shrapnel, resulting in the loss of his right eye. He was taken POW and kept at Stalag XIb Fellingbostel until liberated.
