Ronald Hammond, son of Frederick John and Florence Hammond, of Barrow-in-Furness, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Gunner Hammond successfully completed glider training and was posted to HQ Troop, 1 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Gnr Hammond was killed in action between 19 and 20 September 1944, aged 25, by mortar fire in a garden behind Brigade HQ near the Arnhem Rhine Bridge and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
