After volunteering for airborne forces, John William Sunter served with 2 (Airborne) Forward Observation Unit, Royal Artillery (2 FOU).Whilst serving with the 2 FOU, Gunner Sunter took part in Operation Varsity.

Gunner Sunter was killed in action on the 8 April 1945 and is now buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.
