Correspondence.
Arnhem – Wilson 14002?430.
I write this short letter in the hope that it may be of interest to readers. On my visit to Holland to stay with friends, I was told at after the Arnhem battle, a British soldier spent some time in the cellar of a house, avoiding capture by the Germans. He wrote his name on the door jamb of the cellar. It was not very legible, as you can imagine after 50 years. It read thus: WILSON. 14002?430, 5 Lille Bank, Ferguson Pl, Burnt Island, Fife.
The house is now the residence of the local Vicar; it is situated 200 metres from the HQ of the Airborne museum Hartenstein, Oosterbeek, Holland. The caretaker of the war Graves in Arnhem told me that the number was that of a Royal Artillery soldier. It would be of interest to myself and friends to know if the person survived the war.
