Sidney Arthur Chennell, son of Charley and Mary Chennell of Surrey, volunteered for airborne forces while serving with the Rifle Brigade.He qualified as a military parachutist on Course 108 which ran at RAF Ringway from 20 to 29 March 1944. The course notes record : ‘Pte Chennell. Very good stick jumper. Capable and reliable’.
Pte Chennell was posted to the Holding Battalion, before transfer to B Coy, 3rd Parachute Battalion.
Pte Chennell was killed in action on the first day of Operation Market Garden, 17 September 1944, and is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
