Francis ‘Frank’ Long was enlisted into the British Army in November 1941 and served with The Kings Royal Rifle Corps prior to volunteering for The Parachute Regiment.Following initial training at Hardwick Hall, he attended RAF Ringway on course 83 in September 1943. After qualifying as a military parachutist he was posted to the 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion, as a member of 9 Platoon C Company.

Corporal Long was deployed with 7th (LI) Para Bn, in various campaigns until his demobilisation in 1946.
