The official description reads:
"Progress in the Ardennes Sector against the German salient was slow to a great extent due to the snow which blocked many of the roads and also the large number of landmines laid by the Germans before retreating. This photograph shows L/Cpl S Newton of Turvey near Bedford, searching for enemy mines by prodding the snow covering grass verge at the roadside with a bayonet attached to a pole".
