"The original photograph was taken by Spr. W R 'Ray' Fiander in 1945 who was a good friend of Billie's (they were together the night before he died). Ray sent a copy (accompanied by a letter) to my grandfather, Capt. N A Simpson, nearly 53 years later in December 1997. Billie was my grandfather's batman and it's been told to me anecdotally that he was shot and killed beside my grandfather in a doorway whilst fighting building to building in Athens."  Rory Simpson
