Falklands To End Of Cold War

1981 - 1991

16th Parachute Brigade transitioned through a Field Force organization before becoming the 5th Airborne Brigade and was deployed with two parachute battalions during the Falkland Islands War in 1982. Northern Ireland tours continued after the ending of the Cold War in 1991.

  • Falklands (Operation Corporate)

    On 2nd April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, a British Territory in the South Atlantic, followed the next day by an assault on South Georgia. The defending Royal Marines detachment at both locations were taken prisoner after fierce firefights. The Royal Marines were later repatriated to the UK.

  • Falklands Victoria Crosses

    Two posthumous awards of the Victoria Cross were made to Parachute Regiment soldiers after the Falkland Islands' conflict. The first was to Lt Col ‘H’ Jones, who commanded 2 PARA at the battle of Goose Green. Sergeant Ian McKay was awarded the second for his action during the 3 PARA assault on Mount Longdon two weeks later.

  • Formation of 5 Airborne Brigade

    On the 14th November 1983, 5 Infantry Brigade was re-designated 5th Airborne Brigade, re-introducing an airborne formation once again into the British Army’s order of battle. It came under command of the 3rd (UK) division one of two divisions forming part of the Allied Command Europe (ACE) Rapid Reaction Corps, for employment with NATO. The Brigade’s secondary role was conducting Out of Area (i.e. outside Europe) operations.
