Vernon Edward Castle, son of Edward Castle and Elsie Castle; husband of Jose Castle, of Worcester Park, Surrey, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.
Staff Sargeant Castle successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to F Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
S/Sgt Castle was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 23, whilst on patrol with other glider pilots in the Dennenkamp area and was given a field burial in Renkum, near the railway station. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 4 November 1948.
