Thomas Harvey was the son of Thomas and Isabella Harvey of Kirkcaldy, Fife and husband of Mary Harvey (nee Simpson) also of Kirkcaldy.
He enlisted into the Non-Combatant Corps, and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II. He volunteered for airborne forces in 1943.
Pte Harvey qualified as a military parachutist, as a member of the newly formed 225 Parachute Field Ambulance RAMC, on course 85 which ran at RAF Ringway from 29 September to 10 October 1943. The course instructors’ notes record ‘Quite satisfactory and up to standard’.
He was attached to 5th Parachute Brigade and first saw active service on Operation Overlord in June 1944.
Pte Harvey jumped into Normandy on 6 June and was killed in action on 16 June 1944, aged 26 years old.
After a field burial, Pte Harvey was later interred at Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France
