Stewart Cathie Griffith, known as Billy, served as a senior officer in the Glider Pilot Regiment during the Second World War having established himself as a first-class cricketer in the 1930s, and later played for England and eventually became the Secretary to the Marylebone Cricket Club(MCC).
Commissioned into the Territorial Army, he initially served with the Royal Army Service Corps before transferring to the Glider Pilot Regiment. He took part in the Airborne landings to Normandy, and gained the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions at Arnhem and went on to serve as the Commanding Officer of No 2 Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment before resuming his cricketing career in the late 1940s.
In a distinguished cricketing career he played for Surrey, Sussex, the MCC and played three tests for England.
In later life he was awarded the Territorial Decoration and a CBE for services to cricket.
Billy Griffith died in April 1993, aged 78 years old.
