James Haslam was the son of Stanley and Catherine Haslam, of Rochdale, Lancashir and the husband of Mavis Haslam. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Haslam successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 116. His course report stated he was a ‘nervous, keen worker’. He was posted to 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Haslam was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
