Lieutenant Francis A Derbyshire

Francis Alexander Derbyshire, son of Francis and Frances Derbyshire, of Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire; husband of Mabel Derbyshire, was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Lieutenant Derbyshire successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to G Squadron, 1st Wing Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Lt Derbyshire was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 25, and was given a field burial in the garden of the Ter Horst family. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 8 August 1945.
