Norman Elton served with 11 Flight, E Squadron, No 2 Wing of The Glider Pilot Regiment during World War II and took part in the Normandy campaign and the battle of Arnhem.
After the battle he successfully withdrew across the river with the remnants of the 1st British Airborne Division to the safety of allied lines.
