Stanley Henry Goss was granted an emergency commission in the Royal Welch Fusiliers in September 1940, after completing training at 152nd Officer Cadet Training Unit.
He later volunteered for airborne forces while serving as a War Substantive Lieutenant, and was transferred to the Army Air Corps on 1 August 1942.
Shortly afterwards, Goss undertook parachute training on Course 25 at RAF Ringway which ran from 31 August to 8 September 1942, and subsequently served with T Company, 1st Parachute Battalion, in North Africa for Operation Torch.
Goss was promoted to Acting Captain during the campaign in North Africa and was wounded during the 2nd Battle of Tamera on 28 March 1943. Prior to being wounded Goss, and troops under his command, captured around 20 German soldiers including a mortar crew.
He relinquished his commission on 16 August 1944, on account of the ill health caused by his injuries, and was granted the honorary rank of Captain.
