Private Raymond L A Dean

Raymond Leslie Alfred Dean, son of Alfred Dean, D.C.M. and Ada Dean, of St Budeaux, Plymouth, enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces. His father, Private Alfred Dean was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, for conspicuous gallantry in the First World War whilst serving with Devonshire Regiment.

Private Dean successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course 71 from 5 to 17 July 1943 and was posted to R Company, 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Dean is known to have been killed in the Wolfhezerweg – Amsterdamseweg area on the night of 18 September 1944, aged 20. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial.
