Private Ivan Frank Gurr served with 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA) and served in Cyprus, during the EOKA campaign.
Ivan was a member of 8 Platoon C Company, 1 PARA. The Company was engaged in duties at 16 Para Brigade HQ in Cyprus, located at the Kykko Monastery. Private David Gollop adds: "Ivan was a very popular member of C Company with a kindly, respectful and pleasant disposition".
Ivan was killed in an accident in the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus in June 1956. The Battalion was taking part in Operation Lucky Alphonse in the vicinity of Kykko Monastery. He died along with two other members of 1 PARA when a lorry they were travelling in on a short leave detail went off the mountain road and into a ravine.
Private Gurr died on 10 June 1956, aged 19 years old. He is now buried in Waynes Keep Military Cemetary Nicosia.
