Sgt Ronald Spaul England originally enlisted into the Royal Sussex Regiment and volunteered for the airborne forces shortly after its formation, serving with 11 SAS Battalion.
When the unit was redesignated as the 1st Parachute Battalion, following the formation of No 1 Parachute Brigade, Pte England was posted to Lt. Sherriff's Platoon in T Company.
He attended the 3rd advanced parachute training course for the Brigade which ran at RAF Ringway from 21 January to 29 January 1942.
The intake for this course comprised of 79 men from the 1st Battalion, 44 from the 2nd Battalion and 102 from the 3rd Battalion. While on the course the men jumped in sticks of 10 with arms containers from converted Whitley bombers and performed one night jump from the balloon.
He did not travel with the 1st Battalion when it sailed to North Africa for Operation Torch remaining on home detail.
