My father, John Hempstead, is on this photograph, 2nd from left on back row. My research shows he was attached to No. 21 EFTS on 12 August 1942, and was awarded his army flying badge 1st April 1943. He was attached to No.2 Glider Training School on 20th October 1943. He was in North Africa for 3 months but did not take part in the Italy landings. Instead as part of G Sqdn 10 Flight he landed on 6th June (evening), and was with HQ staff on 1st Arnhem lift on 17th September 1944. He was trapped with members of 2nd Battalion Sth Staffs until he escaped across the Rhine 25th September. He was then transferred out to India, attached to RAF 673 Sqdn, teaching RAF pilots to fly Horsas
