Stanley Jenkinson was the son of John and Hannah Jenkinson of Winmarleigh, Lancashire.

He enlisted with The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) and later became attached to The 13th (S.Lancs.) Parachute Battalion. He sadly died on 19 August 1944 at the age of 19. He was laid to rest in the Putot-En-Auge Churchyard, row A, grave 2. This churchyard in Calavados, France is the final resting place of 31 other Second World War casualties. Our archive does not have him listed as passing any parachute jump instruction. So he may have been attached as a reinforcement.

The 13th Para Bn's war diary records "0400 18 August 1944, battalion moved through Troarn, and arrived across the River Dives in the rear of The 3rd Para Bde., where food arrived and the bn. rested throughout the day. Just before midnight the bn. moved off from the concentration area to cross the river and attack the village of Putot-En-Auge."

Further information about the actions of The 13th Para Bn. can be found in the book "13-Lucky For Some" by Andrew Woolhouse.

A battlefield grave cross is on display at the church at Winmarleigh near Lancaster. Possibly placed their by a family member in memory of Stanley. The images kindly donated by Rev. David Long.
