George F Mathom was a member of 1 Parachute Battalion in South Africa intake of 1989, Charlie Company.
He was initially conscripted at Diskobolos, Kimberley 1 Maintenance unit, and after 2 weeks transferred to sport bungalow due to be a good rugby player. I then did parachute battalion pre selection and passed. Then transferred to 1 Parachute Battalion in Bloemfontein for further selection and basic training.
1989 : 3 month basic training at parachute battalion and made final selection
1989 : signals course
1989 : Special Forces orientation course and final selection
Then 1 Parachute PT course followed by static line jump course in Bloemfontein at 1 Parachute Battalion, qualified as airborne soldier
1990 George took part on Regimental Petty Officer course obtained rank of L/Cpl at Free State Command while serving in the Operations Room
This completed military conscription service
George also did one, 2 month civil unit military camp duty during 1992. On his next camp duty George would have promoted to full corporal, although no further duties were needed and that concluded his time served in the military.
George now lives in Perth, Australia.
