Alfred James Michael worked as a Labourer when he enlisted into The Cheshire Regiment for his National Service at Chester in January 1953. He volunteered for airborne forces in June 1953.

After completely his parachute training, he was posted to 3 PARA and served in the Canal Zone and Cyprus.  Pte Michael later took part in the drop onto El Gamil Airfield, during Op Musketeer on 5 November 1956. He had his watch shot off during the assault to capture the airfield.
