Gerard Charles Swift was the son of William and Margaret Swift, of Battersea, London; husband of Emma Irene Swift, of Battersea, London, he enlisted in The Royal Ulster Rifles and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Swift successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Sgt Swift was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 30, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 23 April 1947.
