G Wainwright enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters and then volunteered for airborne forces.He qualified as a military parachutist on course 101 which ran at RAF Ringway from 31 January to 13 February 1944 and served in A Company, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion.

L/Cpl Wainwright was wounded on the Rhine drop on 23 March 1945.
