Charles was a member of The Sussex Regiment, before volunteering to join the airborne forces.

He conducted his parachute training in Kabrit, Egypt. Then joined The 10 Parachute Battalion. He may have  fought in North Africa. After which he then went with The 10th to Arnhem 1944.

He died from wounds received here on 6 November 1944.
