Joseph Fred Albert Sachro was the son of Fred and Henriette Sachro, of 535 Northland Road, Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario, Canada. Of Ukrainian origin, he was a Telegraph Operator. He was 5’ 11¼”, 153 lbs, dark complexion, Brown eyes, black hair and with 20/20 vision.
He enlisted in the No 2 District Depot on 30 April 1943, arrived in UK on 1 September 1943, transferred to 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion on 14 September 1943 and qualified as a parachutist at RAF Ringway on 18 October 1943 and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Private Sachro and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion jumped into France on 5/6 June 1944. He was killed in action on 14 June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial in an orchard at Le Mesnil, and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 20 June 1945.
