Private William Sands, the son of Charles and Alice Sands, of Edinburgh, enlisted into the Army during the Second World War and became a Piper with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.Pte Sands subsequently volunteered for Airborne Forces in 1942 and was attached to the 3rd Parachute Battalion. He attended parachute training course 14 at RAF Ringway which ran from 27 May to 4 June 1942.

Sadly Private Sands died making his qualifying jump on the final day of the course on 4 June 1942, aged 20 years old. He is now buried at the Mount Vernon Roman Catholic Cemetery in Edinburgh.
