Sergeant John Allan, husband of Florence Ruth Allan, of Whitehaven, served with 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross during his military career.He took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden. He died on 22 September 1944, and is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
