Sapper Ernest Harold Whybrow was the son of Charles Harold and Violet Whybrow of Norwich. He was enlisted into the Royal Engineers during World War II.Sapper Whybrow volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 86, which ran at RAF Ringway in October 1943.

He took part in the Normandy campaign to liberate France from German occupation as a member of  No 3 Troop, 3rd Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers. He and Lance Corporal Gillot were killed by enemy shellfire while occupying positions close to the crossroads at Le Mesnil.

Sapper Whybrow died on 10 June 1944, aged 19 years old, and is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
