Sydney Charles William Wood was the son of William and Mary Wood, of Tottenham, Middlesex.He served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps prior to volunteering for British airborne forces during its formation. When 11 SAS Battalion was reorganised and redesignated to become the 1st Parachute Battalion, he initially served in T Company and later served with the Mortar Platoon.
He deployed with the battalion to North Africa in November 1942 and was killed a few months later during the bitter fighting on the Djebel Mansour.
Sgt Sydney Wood died on 3 February 1943, aged 21 years, and is now commemorated on the memorial at the Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia.
