Pte Charles Myatt served with The Berkshire Regiment prior to volunteering for airborne forces during World War II shortly after the formation of the 1st Parachute Brigade.

He qualified as a military parachutist on course 20, which ran at RAF Ringway from 27 July to 3 August 1942, and was posted to 1st Parachute Battalion, serving with No 1 Detachment Mortars in T Company.

In November 1942 he sailed for North Africa under Brig Richard Gale, his CO was Lt Col S Hill.  They jumped from American aircraft.  Then for the rest of the campaign they fought as Line Infantry.

It was during this time that he was wounded in the back by mortar fire and sent back to the UK to recover.

He later rejoined the Brigade and took part in ‘Operation Husky’ the Invasion of Sicily in July 43. 

Later in the war he was injured on a training jump by being dragged behind the aircraft when his rigging lines got caught.  This was possibly was during training prior to ‘Operation Market Garden’.  He was invalided out of the army with a disability pension.
