Frank Botterill, son of Alfred E and Sarah E Botterill, of Barwell, Leicestershire and  husband of Pheobe Botterill, enlisted into The Royal Artillery and then volunteered for the airborne forces.Lance Bombardier Botterill successfully undertook Glider training and was posted to 2 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery.

He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including L/Bdr Botterill.

L/Bdr Botterill died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 34.

He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
