Corporal McIlvenny served with 9 Para Sqn RE in Northern Ireland and went with them to Falkland Islands.He was in the troop from 20 Field Sqn which was under command of 9 Para Sqn RE for the Falklands war.

He was killed on Sir Galahad, Falklands on 8 June 1982.
