The desperate fighting by the 1st Airborne Division around Arnhem in 1944 produced five Victoria Cross winners of whom only Robert Cain survived. Commanding a rifle company holding a vital sector, Major Cain displayed outstanding gallantry, and powers of command and endurance over a six day period. Despite multiple wounds he was constantly in the forefront wherever danger threatened. Armed only with a light infantry anti-tank weapon, he single handedly immobilised a Tiger Tank, supervised its final destruction, drove off three other tanks, inspired leadership and fearless example, and broke up repeated enemy attacks. His heroism became legendary and severely demoralised the enemy around his position.
