Eric Knowles Stevenson was the son of James and Jane Stevenson, of Edinburgh and served in the 7th (Galloway) Battalion, The King's Own Scottish Borderers which formed part of 1st Airborne Division's Airlanding Brigade. He served in the Support Company's Medium Machine Gun Platoon.He fought in the Battle of Arnhem and was killed in action at 'The White House' (Hotel Dreyeroord) in Oosterbeek while members of the battalion helped to maintain 1st Airborne Division's defensive perimeter.

Pte Stevenson died on 21 September 1944, aged 20 years, and was initially given a field burial in the gardens of the White House. He is now buried in the Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Cemetery, in the Netherlands.
