Private Mark Borland was the son of Joseph and Margare Borland, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, and the husband of Janet Borland, also of Airdrie. He served with 7 Platoon C Company 11th Parachute Battalion and was part of the 2nd Lift to Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.The aircraft carrying Pte Borland was shot down enroute to Arnhem.

Private Borland died on 18 September 1944, aged 29 years old, and is now buried at a joint grave in Wageningen General Cemetery, west of Arnhem.
