Victor Leonard Sparkes enlisted into the East Surrey Regiment, before volunteering for airborne forces.Whilst serving in The 4th Parachute Battalion, Private Sparkes went on Operation Manna in Greece.

He was Killed in Action on 11 December 1944, aged 22 years old and is now buried in Phaleron War Cemetery, Greece.
