George Miller Bassnett served in the ranks (14234502) prior to being granted an emergency commission on 13 November 1943 in The Royal Ulster Rifles.He was promoted to Temporary Captain on 9 January 1945 and served as the 6th Airlanding Brigade's Transport Officer during Operation Varsity, the Rhine Crossing.

He retired from the Army on 24 October 1953 with the honorary rank of Major.
