Pte Walter Charles Henry Smith was serving with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry when he answered the call for volunteers for airborne forces on the formation of 1st Parachute Brigade in late 1941.He qualified as a military parachutist on the 1st course run at RAF Ringway for recruits to the newly formed Brigade and subsequently served in Headquarters Company 1st Parachute Battalion.
