Private William Sloan served with 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Border Regiment.Bill Sloan initially joined the 1st Battalion, Border Regiment early in the Second World War in October 1939. He went with the Battalion to Belgium shortly afterwards as part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), serving in North West Europe before the evacuation from Dunkirk in late May 1940.

Bill stayed with the Battalion when it converted, becoming an Airlanding unit of 1st Airborne Division. In September 1944, Bill took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.

Private Sloan died during the Battle between 24-25 September 1944. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
