William joined the Army Cadets in 1943. He enlisted in the army on 16 Jan 1945, and served with the 6 Airborne Division, 3rd Parachute Brigade in Palestine before it was disbanded. He was parachute jump trained at RAF Ringway on course B182.

William then went on to serve in The Green Howards in Malaya until 1951.
