Eric Winder was the son of Ernest Bright and Isobel Rose Winder, of Barnsley, Yorkshire; husband of Jean Winder of Barnsley, he enlisted in the Royal Amoured Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance/Corporal Winder successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 69 from 21 June to 1 July 1943. His course report stated “Average pupil”. He was posted to 12th (10th Battalion, the Green Howards [Yorkshire Regiment]) Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

L/Cpl Winder was killed in action on 10 June 1944, aged 26, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
