Sergeant Laurence Francis Carter, known by friends as 'Laurie', was the son of Robert and Jane Carter, of Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and the husband of Doris Myrtle Carter, also of Marlow.He joined Airborne Forces after his successful completion of Parachute Course 123 at RAF Ringway in mid-July 1944. Sergeant Carter joined the 10th Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.

Sergeant Carter died on 19 September 1944, aged 24 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
