Lieutenant William Douglas Ardern Burgess, son of Douglas Ardern and Lilian May Burgess, of Hertford, served as Platoon Commander of 12 Platoon, B Company, 10th Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.Lieutenant Burgess died on 21 September 1944, aged 24 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
