Private John Willson Budibent was the son of John Bryan and Ethel Gertrude Budibent. John was the husband of Nancy Frances Budibent and father of Barry, of Southfields, London. He served with the Intelligence Section at Battalion HQ of 156 Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.
Having served with the RASC John and his identical twin younger brother Clement Bryan, both volunteered for the airborne forces and after passing selection joined 156th Parachute Battalion in 1943. They both served in Battalion HQ. and both saw action in Italy before going to Arnhem. John played the piano and piano accordion. He accompanied Ken Scott - Phillips, who was an accomplished singer. This double act entertained members of 156th Bn on countless occasions.
Clement was wounded by mortar fire, was captured and spent much of the War in German hospitals-Utrecht, Brunswick, Rottenmunster and Ludwigsberg. John sadly was killed, according to The CWGC website on 25 September 1944. aged 32 years. However 36 years after the battle Clement and John's old friend Ken met up. In Clement's letter to The Pegasus Journal, April 1981, he said how Ken informed him that he had witnessed John's death. Ken stated that John died marching off the drop zone, under mortar fire, on the 18 September. Sadly John never met his son Barry, who went on to be an accountant.
John was initially buried north of house Sonnenburg. He was eventually laid to rest in plot 30.A.10 in The Oosterbeek War Cemetery.
