Norman David Williams was the son of Thomas Frederick and Leah Williams, of Harborne, Birmingham. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Williams successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and also Glider Pilot training and was posted to D Squadron, The Glider Pilot Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Williams’s body was recovered from the river Rhine opposite Remmerden on 9 November 1944 and was given a field burial at Lienden, Holland. He is assumed to have drowned during the withdrawal on 25 September 1944, aged 21. He was re-interred to Uden War Cemetery at Noord-Brabant, Netherlands on 28 August 1946.
