William Kitching Hodgson was the son of John and Bertha Hodgson, of Milnthorpe, Westmorland. He was commissioned in the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Captain Hodgson successfully completed his glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, the Border Regiment, and attached to 3rd Bn. The Parachute Regiment, he took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Capt Hodgson was killed in action, aged 24, on 26 September 1944 and was buried by local Air Raid Wardens in the Onder de Bomen General Cemetery at Renkum, he was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22 August 1945.
