Francis George Whitfield, son of George Edward and Lavinia Whitfield, of Dormanstown, Redcar, Yorkshire, enlisted into the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.Private Whitfield successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to B Company 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Whitfield was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 30. He was originally buried by local Air Raid Wardens in the Onder Bomen General Cemetery at Renkum and reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
