Michael Cannon was from Blackburn in Lancashire and enlisted for National Service into the Royal Artillery (RA) in 1960.

He volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on 6 December 1960 at RAF Abingdon.

Michael Cannon subsequently served with 33 Parachute Light Regiment, RA. The regiment was redesignated as 7 Parachute Light Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, a year before his release from National Service in July 1962.
